Optimal growth hormone (GH) production, secretion and function are essential for physiological human growth. Relevant assessment of growth hormone deficiency (GHD) is crucial for an early initiation of GH substitution aiming to improve body height and to prevent hypoglycemia and other consequences of GHD. However, even 60 years after the launch of first GH laboratory assay, diagnosis of GHD still faces technical and interpretational problems. GH stimulation tests are considered the golden standard to diagnose GHD, however their specificity is low, and therefore frequently generating false pathologic results. Therefore, diagnosis of GHD requires a complex...

Anorexia nervosa from an endocrinologist's point of viewComprehensive Report

Dana Novotná, Barbora Móriová

Čes-slov Pediat 2023, 78(90):11-16 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2023/060

Anorexia nervosa is a complex psychiatric-metabolic-endocrine disease that has the highest mortality rate among psychiatric diseases. Almost all organs and systems are altered by this disease. Changes in the endocrine system mostly represent the body's adaptation to starvation, an d after regaining the necessary weight and fat mass, they are spontaneously adjusted. However, it does not apply to all changes. There is a disorder of the hypothalamic-pituitary axis with manifestations of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, hypercortisolemia, resistance to growth hormone, thyroid dysfunction , hyponatremia and hypooxytocinemia. The production of antidiuretic...

Multiple endocrine neoplasia syndromes (MEN syndromes) are rare autosomal dominantly inherited diseases with the occurence of tumors of two or more endocrine glands, with possible manifestation in early childhood. A late diagnosis of MEN syndrome can be fatal for an individual. Early identification of at-risk individuals is therefore crucial for the prevention and treatment of potentially life-threatening endocrine and non-endocrine neoplasias. MEN 2B syndrome has the most serious prognosis due to highly aggressive medullary thyroid carcinoma with early postnatal development and a high prevalence of de novo mutations. Knowledge of the non-endocrine...
