Čes-slov Pediat 2025, 80(1):15-19 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2025/002

Respiratory failure remains one of the most common reasons leading to hospitalization in paediatric intensive care units. The aetiology of this condition is quite broad, however, lower respiratory tract infections predominate as the main triggering factor. The treatment of respiratory insufficiency includes support or replacement of lung function by oxygen therapy, non-invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation, and procedures such as inhaled nitric oxide or prone positioning. In situations where these methods fail, extracorporeal life support is necessary. In the following case report, we discuss the complicated course of pneumonia in a patient...

Diagnostic methods in hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy of newborns

Eva Štěpánová, Hana Wiedermannová, David Krahulík, Pavla Hanzlíková

Čes-slov Pediat 2025, 80(1):20-25 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2025/003

Hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE) is the most serious cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality; it involves damage to the brain of a full-term newborn; in premature infants, it occurs in the form of periventricular leukomalacia. The incidence of HIE is approximately 1-3 per 1000 live births worldwide. The most severe forms of HIE, according to some sources, represent up to a 60 % risk of death, therefore rapid and timely diagnosis, especially of moderate to severe forms, early transport to a perinatological center and indication of therapeutic hypothermia can mitigate and predict the consequences of asphyxiation damage. This communication aims...

Current management of pediatric patients with acute pyelonephritis in the Bratislava region

Čes-slov Pediat 2025, 80(1):26-29 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2025/004

Acute pyelonephritis is a common bacterial infection in childhood. It is a concerning infection for pediatricians due to the risk of acute complications, such as urosepsis, or long-term complications, like chronic kidney disease and hypertension. Proper management of pediatric patients with acute pyelonephritis significantly reduces the risk of potential complications, which is why it receives increased attention today.

Parvovirus B19 from the point of view of pediatric hematologist

Eva Jadvidžáková, Petr Hubáček, Zdeněk Kepka, Petr Smíšek, Lucie Šrámková, Jan Starý, Martina Suková

Čes-slov Pediat 2025, 80(1):30-35 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2024/060

Parvovirus B19 is the causative agent of classical childhood illness known as the 5th disease or erythema infectiosum. The occurrence has a seasonal character, with more dominant waves every 3 to 5 years. Remarkably higher incidence since 2023 is observed globally. Similarly to recent distinct waves od RSV and influenza, even in this case we can suspect a connection with covid pandemic (rapid contagion after 2 years of social restrictions). The article describes a cohort of patients with PCR confirmed symptomatic parvovirus B19 infection during a period of 12 years (02/2012-06/2024) at the Department of Pediatric Hematology and Oncology, Motol University...

Challenges in differential diagnosis of seizures in children

Vladimír Komárek

Čes-slov Pediat 2025, 80(1):36-38 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2025/005

Epileptic seizures are the most common urgent events in childhood, particularly during the first year of life. Less than 1% of children suffer from chronic epilepsy, 1% experience a single epileptic seizure, 4% have febrile seizures, and approximately 2% of children exhibit various forms of convulsions or consciousness disorders resembling or mimicking epileptic seizures. Pediatricians are usually the first to encounter a seizure and must decide on further steps based on the presumed diagnosis. Since access to pediatric neurologists is not always available, a basic understanding of the semiology of epileptic seizures and syndromes can be beneficial...

Hypertension in children and adolescents

Čes-slov Pediat 2025, 80(1):39-46 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2025/006

Arterial hypertension i sone of the most common risk factor for cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in adults and cardiovascular and kidney diseases in children. These recommendations for diagnosis and treatment of hypertension in children are based on the current recommendations of the European Society for Hypertension and the European Academy of Pediatrics.(1,2) Hypertension in children is defined as repeatedly (at least 3×) blood pressure ≥ 95th percentile. For adolescents aged 16 and over, it is recommended to use the adult criteria. The incidence of hypertension in childhood has risen significantly in the last decade...
