Tick-borne encephalitis in Slovakia - epidemiology and historyReview

Margita Špaleková

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(Suppl.1):S7-S12 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/023

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is still the serious health problem despite seventy years beeing the object of many studies in natural focuses, available vaccine and large amount of knowledge about its epidemiology and prevention. TBE is in Slovakia the most important arboviral infection. History of complex study of basic principles and causes of TBE occurrence by investigation of biology of ticks, sources of infection and ecologic relations (biotop, biocenosis, climatic and natural factors) together with discovery of its natural focuses started in the former Czechoslovakia after the large outbreak in Rožňava (east Slovakia) in 1951, when 660 individuals...

Tick-borne infections in the conditions of the Czech RepublicReview

Zuzana Blechová, Dita Smíšková

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(Suppl.1):S13-S18 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/024

Ticks are a vector and often a reservoir of viral and bacterial diseases. A person usually gets infected after the infestation of an infected tick or its developmental stage as a random link in its life cycle. Due to the geographical conditions in the Czech Republic, these diseases have a epidemiological significance and impact on morbidity. The communication subject describes infections, their ep idemiology, clinical picture, and diagnostics, focusing on the specifics of childhood in our conditions. The subject of a separate communication is Lyme borreliosis, the most common of these presented diseases.

Lyme borreliosis in childrenReview

Dita Smíšková, Zuzana Blechová

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(Suppl.1):S19-S23 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/025

The Czech Republic is an important endemic area of Lyme borreliosis. Borrelia are transmitted by ticks and have an affinity for many organs and tissues (skin, nervous system, joints, myocardium, etc.). This is associated with a variety of clinical manifestations, with erythema migrans, neuroborreliosis and joint involvement being the most common in children. The basis of laboratory diagnosis is th e detection of specific IgM and IgG antibodies, confirming contact with the infectious agent, not the activity of infection. Direct methods are of limited use mainly due to low sensitivity (PCR) or lack of clinical data (investigation of specific cellular...

Vaccination against tick-borne encephalitisShort News

Hana Cabrnochová

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(Suppl.1):S25-S29 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/026

During the ongoing COVID-19 epidemic, the number of reported cases of selected infectious diseases is decreasing thanks to the applied distance measures. In contrast, in 2020, the increase in tick-borne encephalitis continued for the sixth year. As found by an agency survey on a representative sample of the population, despite the high awareness in society of the existence of this disease (92%), the possibility of vaccination (81%), the vaccination rate in the Czech Republic is still only 33%. In the Czech Republic, the highest incidence of tick-borne encephalitis is reported among all countries of the European Union, yet the vaccination rate is the...

Anaphylaxis - do we know what we eat? or "Even a dog knows who gives him food" (Slovak proverb)Case Histories

Jakub Pecl, Ondřej Rybníček

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(Suppl.1):S30-S34 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/027

Although described and named by Charles Richet and Paul Portier some 120 years ago a naphylaxis still represents a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge for patients, their care-givers and healthcare professionals. Multisystemic manifestations of anaphylaxis without any specific pathognomonic symptom make a decision in a critical situation, often requiring immediate treatment, quite difficult. If not recognized and adequately treated in time, especially without immediate adrenaline administration, anaphylaxis may lead to fatal outcome. Clear identification of the causative allergen and its strict elimination significantly reduces the burden of patients...

DrowningPediatrické postupy v praxi

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(Suppl.1):S35-S37 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/028

Drowning is one of the serious injuries that often has fatal consequences. For survival of drowning people, the earliest possible initiation of cardiopulmonary resuscitation is crucial in order to ensure an adequate supply of oxygen to the body. This mainly concerns the brain tissue. The degree of neurological disability is decisive for the quality of life. This article provides a basic overview of the pathophysiology of drowning, emphasizes the need for early and properly provided first aid, and provides an overview of the key points of intensive and resuscitation care for a drowning patient.

Jana Uherová

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(Suppl.1):S38-S45 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/029

This article provides a summary of the most common summer-associated dermatitides. Atopic eczema represents the most prevalent skin disorder in pediatric dermatology clinic. However, during the summer period the cases of atopic eczema are often replaced by other dermatitides which are typical for the summer period. The increase of summer-associated dermatitides is driven mostly by often stay in na ture and by traveling. Except of prevalent Lyme disease, the summer-associated dermatitides are mostly preventable diseases with mild course and spontaneous recovery. However, they can cause unpleasant summer time of children.

Bacterial skin infections are some of the most commonly occurring infections of patients which visit pediatric and dermatology outpatient department. It is important to have a good understanding of the common clinical manifestations and patogens involved in bacterial skin infections to be able to manage them approprietely.
