Čes-slov Pediat 2023, 78(6):295-297 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2023/049

BRUE is a new term created in 2016 by the American Academy of Pediatrics, replacing previously used term ALTE (Apparently Life Threatening Event). The change occurred due to the inaccuracy of the original definition of ALTE, which is difficult to apply in the clinical practice and research. BRUE is defined as a brief, spontaneously resolved, unexplained medical event that may occur in a child under 1 year of age and this event meets the diagnostic criteria for the condition. Symptoms include irregular breathing, skin discoloration, muscle tone changes, or disturbances in consciousness. BRUE is a diagnosis by exclusion. The aim of this article is to...

Emotionally unstable adolescents - a current challenge of child psychiatry and pediatrics

Čes-slov Pediat 2023, 78(6):298-302 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2023/050

Emotionally unstable adolescents, mainly girls, represent the largest group of patients currently hospitalized in children's inpatient pedopsychiatric departments. At the same time, these patients require the cooperation of pediatricians, especially in cases of self-harm, intoxication, including suicide attempts. An important aspect is the assessment of suicidal risk. Emotional instability in adolescence represents a spectrum of severity, starting with emotional lability common in adolescence, up to disturbance in personality development, which in the most serious case can result in emotionally unstable - borderline personality disorder. Typical features...

Čes-slov Pediat 2023, 78(6):303-307 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2023/033

Objective: To assess advances in detecting severe kidney anomalies by prenatal ultrasound (US) screening over the last 13 years. Methods: The study compared two groups of children born in the University Hospital Olomouc in 2005-2008 (Group A) and in 2018-2020 (Group B) who had severe congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) requiring surgery by two years of age. Statistical analysis was performed using Fisher's exact test. Results: Both groups showed a similar range of severe CAKUT requiring surgery: ureteropelvic junction obstruction, obstructed or refluxing megaureter, posterior urethral valves, and duplicated collecting system...

Introduction: Hymenoptera venom allergy is second most common cause of anaphylaxis in childhood. Currenty, the only causal therapy that can induce tolerance is venom immunotherapy (VIT). Aim: In our work, we focused on the analysis of selected clinical and laboratory characteristics in a group of pediatric patients with hymenoptera venom allergy treated with VIT. Results: The mean age was 11 ± 4,37 years, with the mean age of firts systemic reactions after the hymenoptera sting 9,15 ± 3,58 years. Of the 20 enrolled patients , 14 were allergic to bee venom and 6 to waps venom. VIT was started at an average age of 10 ± 3,86 years,...

The current state of fetal imaging by magnetic resonance imaging

Čes-slov Pediat 2023, 78(6):315-323 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2023/052

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), as a method of the second choice for fetal imaging, provides excellent spatial and contrast resolution for evaluating a wide range of pathological conditions, whether congenital or arising during pregnancy. MR, as a method free of ionizing radiation, is together with ultrasound examination (UZ) a completely safe imaging method. Because a standardized protocol scans the image, this imaging is not dependent on the examiner. It allows re-evaluation by the radiologist, clinical specialist and other doctors and specialists within the multidisciplinary team dedicated to the issue of prenatal fetal examination. The benefit...

Hypophosphatasia: A rare disease with an easy diagnosis and available therapy

Zdeněk Šumník, Ondřej Souček

Čes-slov Pediat 2023, 78(6):325-329 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2023/047

Hypophosphatasia (HPP) is a disease characterized by predominant skeletal involvement and multiple systemic manifestations due to reduced activity of tissue-non-specific alkaline phosphatase (ALP) in the serum. The incidence of severe forms of HPP in European populations is estimated at 1:300 000, with the frequency of milder forms being significantly more common, around 1:6300. HPP is one of the clinically heterogeneous diseases, leading symptoms typically vary by age at manifestation. The most severe, life-threatening forms are the neonatal and infantile forms. HPP can also manifest later in life, most commonly causing skeletal deformities, poorly...

Renal involvement in pediatric inflammatory bowel diseaseComprehensive Report

Eva Švábová, David Bauer, Lucie Gonsorčíková, Jakub Zieg

Čes-slov Pediat 2023, 78(6):330-334 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2023/053

Incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases is rising worldwide, especially within the pediatric population. Except for bowel involvement, other organs may be affected in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. Extraintestinal manifestations usually involve joints, skin, bile ducts and eyes. However, another organ system which can be affected is the urinary tract, especially kidneys. The most commo n renal manifestations of inflammatory bowel diseases are nephrolithiasis and renal parenchymal diseases, such as interstitial nephritis, glomerulonephritis and amyloidosis. In this review, we focus on the spectrum of kidney involvement related to inflammatory...
