Meningococcal infections count among the most dangerous infectious conditions that may affect humans regardless of their age. Anyway, the age groups at highest risk are children up to age 4 years, and adolescents. Adolescents are not only at risk of being infected but also to become source of infection for the contacts when serving as carriers of Neisseria meningitidis infection. The incidence of meningoccal infections in the Czech Republic is not high. In 2023 there were 17 cases of invasive meningococcal diseases confirmed.(1) The spectrum of clinical expression is broad. The illnesses may be divided into noninvasive and invasive. In invasive,...

Meningococcus in practice - why is prevention important?

Jana Váchalová

Čes-slov Pediat 2024, 79(88):13-16 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2024/028

Invasive meningococcal disease is among the most serious infectious diseases with high mortality and a high percentage of severe lifelong consequences for patients who survive. The insidious nature of this disease is that a servus clinical condition often develops within hours from apparent good health, and initial symptoms are usually nonspecific and do not indicate the development of a life-thre atening condition. Even experienced doctors may not recognize this disease in time; therefore prevention, vaccination respectively, is crucial. The presented article is based on case report.

Čes-slov Pediat 2024, 79(88):17-20 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2024/029

The Czech Republic has the highest reported incidence of tick-borne encephalitis of all countries in the European Union, yet the vaccination rate is the lowest of all endemic countries. In 2020, the number of reported cases of tick-borne encephalitis increased to a record 856 cases and a corresponding incidence of 7.98 per 100 thousand inhabitants. The most affected age group in 2020 was the 60-64 age group, but a doubling of the number of reported diseases compared to the previous year was also observed in the youngest and pre-school children. In 2021, a slight decrease in the number of cases was reported to 594, in 2022 it was again 710 cases and...

Prevention options of pneumococcal disease in children

Hana Cabrnochová

Čes-slov Pediat 2024, 79(88):21-24 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2024/030

Pneumococcal infections are still an important cause of morbidity and mortality in children in the Czech Republic. The risk of pneumococcal infections and their complications depends on age and the presence of chronic diseases. The incidence of invasive pneumococcal disease in children is highest in infancy and gradually decreases with age. Even though vaccination has been introduced, there are still isolated child deaths. Since 2010, when reimbursed vaccination of infants was introduced, there has been a temporary decrease in vaccination coverage. Over the last period analyzed, an increase in vaccination coverage to 78% was recorded for children born...

The new recommendations are a follow-up to the 2012 Standard treatment guidelines(1) and the 2016 special issue of Czech-Slovak Paediatrics dedicated to tuberculosis (TB).(2) The present document reflects the new recommendations(3) of the World Health Organization (WHO), which has long been seeking new strategies for optimal treatment of paediatric and adolescent patients, as more than 10 million people worldwide develop TB annually, including 1.2 million children.(4) In the Czech Republic, TB remains a rare disease, with an incidence of 3.6/100,000 in 2022.(5) Childhood TB mirrors the trend of...
