Autoinflammatory diseases (AID) include a diverse group of diseases defined by dysregulation of the innate immune system. Clinical manifestations of sterile inflammation include usually episodic fever with variable presence of organ involvement. A more detailed understanding of the etiopathogenetic background of AID opens new perspectives for targeted therapies. Disease activity control and preven tion of organ damage are the main treatment goals. Multidisciplinary management of AID should be concentrated in specialised centers. The best known group of AIDs,periodic fever syndromes, include Familial Mediterranean fever (FMF), Mevalonate kinase deficiency...

Čes-slov Pediat 2023, 78(4):206-209 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2023/036

Spinal muscular atrophy (SMA) is an autosomal recessive inheritable neurodegenerative disease caused by mutation of the SMN1 gene encoding a protein essential for the survival of motoneurons of the anterior corners of the spinal cord and brainstem nuclei. The disease leads to progressive muscle weakness, skeletal muscle atrophy, and respiratory insufficiency, while sensory sensitivity and cognitiv e functions remain preserved. The disease is classified based on the age of onset of symptoms, the highest level of psychomotor development achieved, and expected life expectancy. The diagnostic standard is a molecular-genetic examination. In recent years,...

Čes-slov Pediat 2023, 78(4):210-214 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2023/037

Aim: Contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) is a novel diagnostic method that enables dynamic imaging of tissues in real time with recording characteristic pattern of bearing contrast agent in liver lesion. The aim of the authors is to point out the importance of this imaging modality in the differential diagnosis of liver tumors in newborns through the presentation of two case reports. Methodology: After intravenous application of microbubble contrast agent with exclusively intravascular distribution the si gnal intensity is recorded in the individual phases of the examination in liver lesion and its surroundings. During the arterial phase the vascularization...

Current trends in the management of inguinal hernia in childrenCase Histories

Inguinal hernia is one of the most common surgical diagnoses in childhood and is often diagnosed during the first year of life. Clinically, the inguinal hernia usually manifests as a bulge in the groin area and represents the protrusion of the organs of the peritoneal cavity through a preformed or secondary made aperture. An inguinal hernia can also manifest as a stiff, significantly painful resistance in the groin or scrotum area, which cannot be freely reponed, it is a so-called "incarcerated" or strangulated inguinal hernia. An incarcerated hernia in a child is one of the acute abdominal events. Treatment of inguinal hernia is only surgical. Non-incarcerated...

Čes-slov Pediat 2023, 78(4):224-230 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2023/039

Introduction: Emotional intelligence is an important part of mental health. It is represented by the ability to accurately perceive, evaluate, express and process emotions, as well as the capacity to use feelings for intellectual growth. Children can learn these skills in social and emotional learning programs, such as the international program Zippy's Friends, which is implemented also in Slovaki a and Czechia. With Zippy's Friends, children learn to process feelings, communicate, establish and maintain friendships, resolve conflicts, manage stressful situations, and develop empathy. Objective: To implement systematic scientific evaluation of the...

The role of neutrophils and neutrophil extracellular traps in renal diseases of bacterial originReview

Neutrophils are a central component of the innate immune system. In recent years, neutrophils have gained considerable attention due to their newly discovered biological effector functions and their involvement in various pathological conditions. Neutrophils represent the first line of the immune system defense and act as a physical and chemical barrier against pathogens. Activated neutrophils can release contents - decondensed chromatin along with antimicrobial granular proteins creating neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs). The NET formation is triggered by the contact with various pro-inflammatory stimuli, including microorganisms, cytokines, immune...
