Poliomyelitis is serious infection caused by neurotropic virus. In the past, infection was contracted mostly by children less 5 years old, outbreaks occurred in underdeveloped regions. Infection could be asymptomatic or flu-like disease and about 1% ill persons manifested in paralytic form. More than six decades since mass vaccination of children by inactivated vaccine (IPV) and more imunogenic oral live vaccine (OPV), both with antigens of three poliovirus types (1, 2, 3) has been used. In the former Czechoslovakia vaccination started already in 1957 (IPV) and in 1960 (OPV). Our Republic was one of the leaders in immunization and by intensive surveillance...

Objective: The aim of this study was to analyse epidemiology and clinical course of paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS) in the Czech Republic. Methods: We performed a retrospective-prospective nationwide observational study based on patients hospitalised with PIMS-TS according to World Health Organization definition and who were admitted to a hospital in the Czech Republic between November 1st, 2020, and May 31st, 2021. The anonymised data of patients (demographic and clinical data) were obtained from their medical records. Some of the data from the above-mentioned study period were compared...

Clostridioides difficile infection in children hospitalised in Motol University HospitalOriginal Papers

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(6):340-344 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/060

Clostridioides difficile infections (CDI) are traditionally attributed to adults, but children can also be affected. In children, when indicated, laboratory diagnosis of CDI should be combined with testing for the presence of other gastrointestinal pathogens that are a common cause of diarrhoea, particularly in younger children. This was also confirmed in a cohort of 652 children with diarrhoea admitted to the Motol University Hospital, where 71 PCR-positive tests for toxigenic C. difficile revealed another infectious cause in 33.8% (n = 24) by multiplex PCR. The detection of toxigenic C. difficile by PCR does not distinguish between...

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(6):345-352 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/061

Introduction: The most common group of sleep disorders in the pediatric population is sleep disordered breathing. Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in the pediatric population can be considered a relatively common disease with serious clinical consequences. One of the treatment options for severe sleep disordered breathing is treatment with non-invasive positive airway pressure (NIV). Objective: The aim of this work is to evaluate the effectiveness of NIV in children with sleep disordered breathing in Slovakia. Methodology: The study was realised in the children's sleep laboratory at the Klinika detí a dorastu JLF UK a UNM. Patients were screened for sleep...

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(6):353-355 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/062

Child abuse and neglect syndrome, known by its abbreviation as syndrome CAN, is one of the most overlooked and underestimated areas of pediatrics. Moreover, research in recent years has already showed, that its severity lies not only in the violent and traumatic behavior towards child, but also in the devastating consequences, that such behavior has. The growing tensions and aggression in society, the deepening of poverty and social disparities, especially in the context of the pandemic and the ongoing military conflict, make the problem even more pressing. Although the global solution of the problem goes beyond our possibilities and competencies as...

Jana Chromá, Nikol Španihelová

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(6):356-361 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/063

The term nomophobia was derived from the term 'NO MObile PHOne phoBIA', a phobia of breaking contact with a mobile phone. Objective: The aim of the research was to determine the rate of nomophobia in children. Methods: The research was carried out using quantitative research methodology. The standardised Nomophobia Questionnaire (NMP-Q) was used for data collection. The tools were used with the agreement of the authors and according to their precise methodology. Linguistic verification and pilot testing took place. Results: The research population was 237 children. The results indicate that 47 % of children have mild nomophobia, 41 % moderate and 10...

Supracondylar fractures of humerus in children - overviewShort News

Martin Vlach, Vojtěch Havlas, Jakub Kautzner

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(6):362-365 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/064

Supracondylar humeral fractures are one of the most common fractures of childhood in the upper limb. Due to the specific anatomy of the distal humerus and the intimate relationship between nerves and blood vessels, this type of fracture has a higher risk of serious complications. The basis of successful treatment is knowledge of the anatomy and pathophysiology of this injury. Clinical and radiolog ical diagnostics have been well developed over the years. However, opinions on therapeutic approach differ with regard to the experience of individual centres. In particular, the methods of surgical reduction and fixation differ according to the type of fracture....

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(6):366-369 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/065

The morbidity of 300 children from birth to 2 years in the districts of Karviná (KI) and České Budějovice (CB), differing in the degree of air pollution, was studied. As expected, there were more sick children in the Karviná district, the most common being upper respiratory tract infections, with an average frequency of 126,8 dg / 100 children / year compared to 98 dg / 100 children / year in CB. 84% of children from KI and 75% of children from CB became ill. The proportion of children with lower respiratory tract disease was comparable - 29.7% in KI and 30.7% in CB, with a frequency of 26.85 dg / 100 children in KI and 24.6 dg / 100 children in CB....

Tomáš Honzík, Jiří Zeman

Čes-slov Pediat 2022, 77(6):370-382 | DOI: 10.55095/CSPediatrie2022/066

Introduction: Inborn errors of amino acid (AA), organic acid (OA) metabolism and disorders of the urea cycle (UCD) represent a heterogeneous group of 135 different diseases caused by impaired synthesis, transport or degradation of AA, OA and ammonia. Individual diseases are rare, but the overall incidence in the population is 1: 3000-4000. Methodology: The work summarizes the clinical, diagnostic and therapeutic aspects of the most common inborn errors of AA, OA metabolism and UCD. Eight diseases are part of laboratory neonatal screening, diagnosis of other IEMs depends on clinical suspicion, determination of ammonia in the blood and rapid indication...
