Introduction: laboratory newborn screening (LNS) is a preventive population-wide program that enables early diagnosis and efficient treatment of patients with selected congenital and hereditary diseases and improves significantly their quality of life. Methodology: analysis of capillary blood collected between 48 and 72 hours of life in the form of a dried blood spot by tandem mass spectrometry, fluorimetry, immunoassay and molecular genetic methods. Results: in the Czech Republic, LNS was started in 1975 with a search for phenylketonuria (PKU), further expanded in 1985 by congenital hypothyroidism (CH), in 2006 by congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH),...

Hereditary angioedema (HAE) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of localized, bradykinin-mediated swelling of the deep tissues of the skin, respiratory and gastrointestinal tract, which can be life-threatening. In most cases, HAE is caused by C1-esterase inhibitor (C1-inhibitor) deficiency, most commonly due to a mutation in the SERPING1 gene. Symptoms usually begin in childhood or adolescence and worsen towards adulthood. Diagnosis is complicated by the considerable variability of clinical symptoms and/or the presence of concomitant, mainly allergic diseases. In this article, we describe a series of 6 patients from 3 families...

SARS-CoV-2 placentitis is a rare and serious complication of COVID-19 disease in pregnancy. The coronavirus placental infection may lead to maternal and fetal vascular malperfusion (pregnancy itself is a prothrombotic state), fetal demise, intrauterine hypoxia, fetal growth restriction, or preterm birth with the accompanying neonatal morbidity. In case of transplacental transmission of SARS-CoV-2, newborns can also suffer from early-onset viral pneumonia. Consequently, comprehensive epidemiology control sho uld be implemented during pregnancy (frequent testing, contact tracing, vaccination). Furthermore, anticoagulation prophylaxis (low-molecular-weight...

Paediatric inflammatory multisystem syndrome temporally associated with SARS-CoV-2 (PIMS-TS) is already becoming known to the Czech paediatric specialist public and is part of a differential diagnosis in patients with a minimum of three days' fever. The presented article is based on recent published studies, but also on the experience of our department and is dedicated to differential diagnosis of this new disease.

COVID-19-associated multisystem inflammatory response syndrome in children (PIMS-TS) is a rare complication of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children, and cardiovascular involvement is a significant factor in the morbidity of this disease. Cardiovascular complications include left ventricular dysfunction, coronary artery dilatations or aneurysms, rhythm disturbances, pericarditis and valvulitis. In some patients, the disease may present with shock, and thromboembolic events may also be a serious complication. The key diagnostic methods for cardiovascular complications in PIMS-TS are transthoracic echocardiography and electrocardiography. Although most patients...

Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) is heterogeneous disease characterized by uncotrolled proliferation of T lymphocytes and macrophages result of which is overproduction of cytokines and hemophagocytosis. Without adequate therapy this condition could be life-threatening. We present a case of infant with secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis in SARS-CoV-2 infection.
